Blue and White Majolica / delftware workshop
A two Sunday afternoon class in the art of Majolica, otherwise known as delftware. The distinctive blue and white technique appears all over the world in pottery made in Iran, Spain, and made famous by the Dutch in the form of Delftware. It is made using a technique where cobalt oxide is painted over a white glaze. Tin is used in glaze recipes to create opacity, helnce its other name 'tin glazed ceramics'.
This class is open to all levels. In first class your tutor Rose de Borman will show the basics of hand building simple forms in red terracotta clay. You will be free to create any object you choose from simple plates to sculptures and will be supported with demonstrations and reference images. These will be fired ready to paint up in blue and white the following week. Your items will be fired again ready to take home a couple of weeks after. The work is fired to earthenware temperature which maintains the luminosity of the colours and is food safe.
