Up With The Birds - free dawn chorus listening
Multiple dates and times
Online, Zoom
Description
A virtual gathering, to listen to the birdsong we have around us, wherever we find ourselves.
It's a little time early in the day to tune in and share our understanding and appreciation of what we can hear.
Since beginning in the first lockdown of 2020 we've listened together to birds in Cornwall, Karachi, Herefordshire, Cape Town, Glasgow, Dublin, Cologne and many places in between.
We join from our gardens and our local walks, or just listen in from home.
For the first 30 minutes we mainly just listen to the birds, use the text chat to identify and ask questions about what we can hear together.
For the second 30 minutes we open the spoken conversation.
The sessions are hosted by Charlie Peverett, of Birdsong Academy and Shriek of the Week.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What do I need to join?
If you sign up you'll receive a link to visit. We use Zoom conferencing, which is simple to use. A phone work's best for the audio quality, and is easy to carry into the garden or stick out of the window to capture the sound of any birds near you. Just download the Zoom app to your phone or tablet.
What's the sound quality like on Zoom?
This is a DIY effort, with no specialist equipment. Zoom gives us the opportunity to do this together, with what we have. It's not Radio 4, but it is live and interactive and we never know what we're going to hear next.
What might we hear?
We've heard over 60 species so far, including turtle dove, whimbrel, nightingale, firecrest, blackcap, garden warbler, yellowhammer, skylark, lesser whitethroat and stock dove. And many, many wrens.
Can I just listen in?
Yes! If you can't hear any birds from where you are, or you just feel like listening from the comfort of your duvet or kitchen, please do join us.
Do I have to join for the hour?
Many people do, but you can drop in for however long you like.
It's early, what if I'm not fit to be seen?
It's ok, the call is audio only. We occasionally turn video on for a good sunrise or bluebell wood in bloom. But there's no need to worry about how your hair looks, or anyone else's.
