Join a half-day walking workshop to explore how to identify common resident and autumn migrant birds by ear, in the wildlife-rich historic parkland and gardens of Herstmonceux Castle.
By late September, most birds have put away their songs for the year. But tuning into the subtle sounds of autumn can be a rewarding way to discover many of our resident birds, and those heading South towards their wintering grounds.
Each ‘walkshop’ includes:
- Before the day, access to step-by-step audio lessons on how to identify five key species by sound
- A gentle 2 to 2.5-hour walk around the woodland, lakeside and parkland at Herstmonceux Castle
- A sit-down Q&A session to end the morning
- Potential species encountered will include Swallow, Wheatear, Goldcrest, Firecrest, Grey Wagtail, House Martin, Song Thrush, Nuthatch, Treecreeper, Great Spotted & Green Woodpeckers, Robin, Blackbird, Dunnock, Stock Dove, common finches, crows & tits, Chiffchaff, Blackcap, Buzzard and Kestrel.
- Updates from the estate team on plans to protect and restore important habitats for wildlife on the estate
- Small group size (maximum 14 participants)
- Starts 9am, finishes 12.30pm
This event is led by Charlie Peverett of Birdsong Academy.

A few more details:
- ROUTE: The route for the walk includes some possibly muddy paths and gentle ups and down, but it will be taken slowly. Walking boots are recommended.
- WEATHER: The walk will go ahead unless there is a weather warning for rain or wind in place, in which notice will be given via email on the previous day (with tickets valid for a future event)
- CHILDREN: Accompanied children aged 12+ are welcome to attend.
- DOGS are brilliant but not always conducive to group bird listening, so they need to be left at home for this event.
