BIYA BIYA: Mending Party

Thick thighs wearing out your jeans? Ripped your favorite top? Bring your clothes that need a little love to learn how to mend them! Extending the life of our clothes keeps them out of the 92 million tons of annual textile waste produced globally. 

We practice care for our clothes to:
+Preserve our individual, generational, and broader material culture
+Divest from capitalist overconsumption
+Practice an ethic of care that extends to relationships with human and non-human entities
+Build relationships with our community through a resource we all need!

We will go through a brief overview of mending history and discuss different mending techniques. The rest of the time will be an opportunity for you to work on your project with the help of the facilitator and tutorial resources.

Some things you can bring to mend are:
Jeans, sweaters, socks, tights, t-shirts, tote bags, etc.

All levels are welcome! Supplies will be provided, but feel free to bring your own (i.e. needle, thread, scissors, yarn, fabrics). And definitely bring your item to mend! 

Outside access notes: 
Exact coordinates will be shared the day before the outdoor program. We will be gathered on a grassy area with blankets and limited low-seated beach chairs. Feel free to bring what will support your comfort.

Participants are welcome as early as 11:45pm to grab snacks and mingle with fellow art-makers. The workshop will begin promptly at 12pm. In the event of weather events, the program will meet at a studio in Avondale.

Adeeba Arastu is a designer, researcher, and fashion writer based in Chicago. Learning about Hyderabadi textiles and embroidery from their Nani instilled in them an early appreciation of fashion and textile labor. Adeeba’s work is interested in environmental justice, material culture, and imagining a world beyond capitalism. Adeeba is the author of the sustainable fashion zine series Hot Girls’ Guide and Dress Rehearsals on Substack.
