The World Is On Its Side: an Art Basel + Miami Art Week Sustainability and Impact Kick-off

Wed Dec 4, 2024 3:00 PM - 8:00 PM EST LoveLife Café, 545 NW 26th St STE, suite 110 Miami, FL, 33127

B Lab U.S. & Canada and Florida for Good Presents The World Is on Its Side, an Art Basel + Miami Art Week Sustainability and Impact Kick-off. Join us for an afternoon of workshops, expert panels, and real-time coalition-building catered to artists, business leaders, and the broader creative economy.

'The World Is On Its Side' is a direct translation of the Yoruba word 'Ayed'Egbe,' also the namesake of a standard textile print produced exclusively by Yoruba women textile artists in Southwestern Nigeria. This phrase reflects the complex social, economic, and political environment we live in while also honoring art's role in fostering social change—especially when produced by Indigenous and marginalized communities.

This event aims to answer the question: what does it mean to produce art when the world is on its side? We will hear from artists whose work centers on the climate crisis, highlight best practices from B Corps, who are leading this new economy and collectively imagine a future where art and sustainability are intrinsically linked.

Attendees will learn how to root their art production, creative projects, branding, and creative teams in sustainability and equity. Come to connect with like-minded creative peers, gain insights from sustainability and impact leaders near and far to Miami, and leave with new skills and expertise in pursuing sustainability in your practice. Whether you work at a studio, a gallery, an agency, a festival, or from home, you can shape yourself as a creative leader committed to impact.

Check out our schedule of panels and workshops for December 4th below. Panels and workshops will take place from 3 to 6 p.m., followed by a happy hour with food by Love Life Café and an open bar sponsored by 818 Tequila.

Event Overview

(3:00 - 3:30pm) Attendee Arrival + Welcome

(3:30p - 4:30pm) Canvas for Change (Opening Panel) This invigorating opening conversation features B Corp leaders Jaime Salm (Mioculture), Veronica Pesantes (Miami Art Hang and Decolonizing Project), and Annette Felder (Felder Felder) on how they are leading their studios, production facilities, and art practices to pursue environmental stewardship and equity. We will discuss on this panel:

  • Pursuing sustainable art, green creative production, and equity across the art cycle
  • How B Corps can engage with sustainability and art in their practices and business models
  • The artist's road to a zero-footprint Art Cycle, from sourcing energy-efficient equipment and greening production practices, to reducing waste

(4:30 - 5:15pm) Circularity 101 for Artists | An Introduction to Circularity and How to Build A Generative Art Practice (Workshop 1) - What is circularity? Why does this matter for artists? For artists pursuing sustainability and greening their practice, understanding and beginning to engage circularity in your art practice will be as simple as mixing red and blue to make violet after this workshop. The talk will be led by Oluwakemi Oritsejafor, Special Projects at B Lab U.S. & Canada, and Susan Caraballo, of The Things Lab, an ever-changing immersive art installation vis-a-vis reuse center, library of things, and material archive.

(5:30 - 6:15pm) Creative World Goes Green | Environmental Stewardship and Art for Good (Workshop 2) - Join our hands-on workshop and gain a deep understanding of designing, funding, and executing a successful environmentally conscious creative project with Neil Ramsey, The Creative Economist and a FIU Professor & faculty of FIU's Ratcliffe Art & Design Incubator. This workshop will cover creating a sustainability plan, aligning creative projects to industry standards and best practices, and creating an accurate budget and resource plan. Learn how to structure your budget effectively, highlight sustainability initiatives, and showcase your green-producing ingenuity.

(6:15-8pm) Happy Hour with a special menu provided by LoveLife Cafe and an open bar sponsored by 818 Spirits, a Certified B Corp. Join for SOLA Market's sustainable art activation: make-your-own cyanotype business card!
