Resource allocation and economic evaluation in local government settings

Economic evaluation has become an increasingly important tool for shaping effective, evidence informed decision making.

Katharina Janke and Hebatallah Ali are health economists from Lancaster University who have extensive expertise in undertaking economic evaluations within local government settings.

In this session, Katharina and Heba will draw on a series of illustrative case studies to provide an accessible introduction to how economic evaluation methods can be applied in real-world settings to support better policy decisions. The examples will include:

• Tools for priority setting using an explicit economics approach that help services to maximize the impact of resources
• Selective licensing in the private rented sector, and how economic analysis can be used to evaluate its health and social impact
• Smart lamps for falls prevention in care homes, highlighting how innovative technologies can be assessed for value and impact
