Module 2: Governing with Purpose in the New B Corp Standards
Session One gave you the compass. Session Two is about who you're travelling with.
The central shift in the new standards is that the assessment has become relational. It asks how you listen to the people your business affects, and how you work with others to make change happen. Purpose becomes something you practice with other people, not only something you state.
This session shows how that comes to life in three connected areas.
We'll start with stakeholder governance: how your purpose shows up in the way decisions get made, and the governance documents and leadership oversight your size track requires. Many of you will find you already have these in draft form.
From there we'll move to engagement and grievance channels, the ways you hear from your stakeholders day to day and when something needs attention. The standard treats these as two halves of one foundational requirement. We'll work through practical mechanisms like surveys, contact forms, and interviews, and help you design channels that are right-sized for your business. These come back into use in Session Three, so the work you do here supports success in additional topics areas.
We'll close with collective action: the Government Affairs and Collective Action pathways available and, how to choose one that fits your capacity.
You'll leave seeing purpose, listening, and working together as one piece of governance work, with a clear picture of what it looks like for a business your size.
By the end of this session, you'll be able to:
Explain what it means that the new standard is relational, and what that changes about how you run your business
Describe what a grievance channel is, what it has to do, and what it does not have to be at your size
Distinguish proactive stakeholder engagement from reactive harm reduction, and see why the standard treats both as foundational
Design engagement and grievance channels that are right-sized and implementable
Choose the engagement mechanisms that suit your business and your stakeholders, including surveys, contact forms, and interviews
Identify the governance documents and board or leadership oversight your size track requires, and recognize what you already have in draft form
Choose a collective action pathway that fits your capacity

This fall, we’re launching a five-part virtual learning series designed to help our community navigate the new B Corp standards with clarity and confidence.
Across five monthly sessions, we work through the standards topic by topic:
what applies to your business
what each area asks of you
how the pieces connect
where your existing work already counts
Sessions are open to everyone, whether you're currently Certified, recertifying, or considering certification; and wherever you're joining from across BC, Canada, or the U.S.
Each session stands on its own, so drop in for one or come to all five!
