Across the Square
22nd December 1917. There is a knock at the door of leading suffragist, Millicent Garrett Fawcett’s home at 2, Gower Street, Bloomsbury. Lady Ottoline Morrell, a patron of the Bloomsbury Group, has crossed the Square from her home at 44 Bedford Square, to express her condolences for the loss of a much-loved sister.
Across the Square depicts an imagined encounter between two sharply contrasting women, each of whom inhabits very different lives. Ottoline’s vast circle of friends includes Prime Ministers, novelists, painters, and philosophers, whilst Millicent has dedicated her whole life to the campaign for women’s suffrage. What common ground, shared values, and empathy will they find?
This event is for those aged 16+.
