Join us for a friendly, hands-on introduction to authentic Brazilian music, led directly by legendary Rio guitarist Rogério Souza alongside an international team of musicians and local group Bossa das Ondas. The workshop is open to all acoustic instruments, and for percussionists, there'll be plenty of Brazilian percussion instruments on hand.
Please book in advance. Tickets £10 + booking fee. Student entry with valid ID (school or higher education) is free but a place must be booked. Participants under 16 must be accompanied by a responsible adult.
Whether you are a beginner looking to try something new or an experienced player wanting to dive into deep Brazilian harmonies and rhythms, this workshop is open to all Manx musicians regardless of ability or previous familiarity with Brazilian styles.
What to Expect
- Explore classic Rio de Janeiro styles: Practical guidance on bossa nova and samba rhythms, including arrangements of iconic tunes like Corcovado, Carinhoso, and Cochichando.
- All acoustic instruments welcome: If you play acoustic guitar, mandolin, ukulele, flute, clarinet, saxophone, accordion, or violin, your instrument is perfect for Brazilian choro and bossa nova! Winds, strings, and brass of all kinds are warmly invited.
- Percussion: This is a fantastic opportunity for any percussionist to explore Brazilian and latin rhythms. Traditional Brazilian percussion instruments such as the tantan or rebole (hand drum), pandeiro, reco-reco and tambourim will be provided on-site, with live demonstrations by guest percussionist Adam Haus from Chicago and Andy Marshall (Bossa das Ondas). Brazilian music is all about the rhythm, and the workshop will be of interest to all levels of percussionist.
- Supporting materials will be supplied in advance: Sheet music, chord charts and links to listen to the tunes beforehand.
- Multi-Tutor Support: Taught by Rogério Souza, supported by Hamburg guitarist Nikolai Voigt, Adam Haus, and local trio Bossa das Ondas - ensuring plenty of individual support for every skill level.
- Rogério Souza and Nikolai Voigt have agreed to give this workshop for a symbolic price only - we want this to be a friendly, accessible event that involves any musician that would like to participate. Please donate more at time of booking or on the day if you wish. Student entry is free, but you must reserve a ticket.
Students under 16 must be accompanied by an adult.
