Botanical Skills NI: The Hawthorns (Crataegus) of Britain and Ireland, with Cameron Crook

Hawthorns are a challenging yet rewarding group. In this webinar, the Botanical Skills Northern Ireland Project will be joined by botanist Cameron Crook to explore the key identification features of our two native species, alongside their numerous hybrids - both with each other and with non-native species.

Given the sheer diversity of Crataegus, we’ll focus on those you’re most likely to encounter in the field, including difficult hybrids and commonly self-seeding introduced species from elsewhere in Europe. The session will provide practical guidance on recognising key traits, understanding hybrid variation, and developing confidence when faced with this complex genus.
