BSBI Field Meeting at RBGE

Sat 14 May 2022 10:15 AM - 3:30 PM BST

Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh, EH3 5LP

Description

***You can book right up until 0800 of the day of the event***

Whilst there are many exotic species in the beautiful Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh, we will search for species native to Scotland in the Rock Garden, the Woodland Garden, around the Pond and the Scottish Native Plant Collection in the Heath Garden. Some of the less intensively managed corners of the garden have some rather surprising species like Townhall Clock (Adoxa moschatellina) which we’d hope to see.

Aim

The emphasis of this field meeting will be on learning and we would particularly welcome anyone who has not been on a BSBI field meeting before. So we would prefer not to tell you what the plants are - at least not initially - and assuming they are not labelled!  We'd like you to work in groups using identification books to work that for yourself. After all, it is the best way to learn. We will of course be on hand to help and confirm...

Meeting Place

East Gate off Inverleith Row. We will meet just outside the small cafe at the East Gate entrance to the Garden. This is marked "Botanical Garden's East Entrance" on the Google Location Map below. Post Code for SatNav purposes is EH3 5LP or NT 2493 7530 if you have a GPS.

Meeting Time

Please arrive promptly for 10.15, to avoid everyone having to hang around. If you do arrive late, we probably won’t have gone far so track us down and join us! If necessary phone me on 0791 7152580 for directions.  Note the gardens don't open until 10am, and it will take a good 10 minutes to walk across from the main (John Hope Gateway) entrance, on Arboretum Place.

What to bring

  • Strong shoes, waterproofs, extra layer, hat, etc
  • Packed lunch (if you don't want to join us in one of the garden cafes for lunch)
  • Plant identification books - If you don’t already have Collins Wild Flower Guide by David Streeter, I would recommend that you buy it – it is by far the best field guide for beginners and improvers.
  • x10 magnification handlens
  • Notebook & pen

Cancellations

Please let me know if you find you are not able to come as soon as possible. If the meeting is fully subscribed your cancellation may allow those on the reserve list to attend.
