Holyrood Park’s dramatic hills and crags give Edinburgh its distinctive skyline. They also provide grassland habitats for a remarkably diverse and interesting flora. We hope to see species such as Adder’s-tongue (Ophioglossum vulgatum), Spring Sandwort (Minuartia verna), Spring Cinquefoil (Potentilla verna) amongst many others. Historic Scotland manage the park and one of their rangers will give us a short talk about its conservation management. 

Aim

The emphasis of this field meeting will be on learning and we would particularly welcome anyone who has not been on a BSBI field meeting before. So we would prefer not to tell you what the plants are - at least not initially!  Faith Anstey & Jim McIntosh will lead the group. We'd like you to work in groups using identification books to work that for yourself. After all, it is the best way to learn. If you have Faith's Pocket Guide to Wild Flower Families, then bring it along. We will of course be on hand to help and confirm...

Please arrive promptly for 10.15. If you do arrive late, we probably won’t be far away so if necessary phone me on 0791 7152580 for directions.  

What to bring

• Boots, waterproofs, extra layer, hat, etc
• Packed lunch
• Plant identification books - If you don’t already have Collins Wild Flower Guide by David Streeter, I would recommend that you buy it – it is by far the best field guide for beginners and improvers. Also if you have the Pocket Guide to Wild Flower Families then bring it along.
