ABOUT US: 

Breakwater: a permanent structure constructed at a coastal area to protect against tides, currents, waves, and storm surges.

Breakwater Festival is an annual event that aims to provide a respite from the untamed tides of online exchanges. Out in the midst of the life-giving chaos, where the freshwater of the river flows into the salt water of the sea, a new navigation pattern has become visible, as people from all walks of life hunt for meaning.

The Estuary movement, which has been inspired by the works of thinkers like Paul Van der Klay, Jonathan Pageau, John Vervaeke and others, has inspired an ongoing conversation in this unique network of distributed cognition, allowing individuals to open up, have honest dialogues, and build sustainable communities that impact real life. While these spaces have found a life of their own through online means, we believe there is an importance in taking this movement beyond the screen, allowing the fresh and salt water to mix in our real-world environments.  

To achieve this, our festival works alongside established and emerging in-person Estuary groups to organize intimate events that help these meetups dig roots and lay a foundation for sustainable growth in their area.  In doing so, we hope to create harbors for meaningful conversations, collective sensemaking and connectedness that are grounded in local communities. In essence, we hope this support to local Estuary group create Breakwaters to protect against the tides, currents, waves, and storm surges of life.
