Internal Family Systems (IFS) and the Inner Critic: Working with the Inner Critic and Developing an Inner Champion
Note: This class will expand on our Introduction to Internal Family Systems (IFS) Therapy and/or Internal Family Systems (IFS) Course . Those with equivalent previous knowledge or experience of IFS are welcome.
The Inner Critic is a protector that tries to control our behavior by reminding us of all of our negative traits and failings. Most clients have them and they can be one of the most difficult parts to work with.
The Critic is experienced as a nattering voice in our heads that can evoke feelings of shame and deflation and cause us to feel unworthy and dejected. Ultimately, it is trying to help us achieve what we want: connection, acceptance, and self-esteem; but, paradoxically, its efforts do the opposite.
Bonnie has outlined a specific protocol for working with the Inner Critic.
The Inner Champion is a set of capacities of the Self that are an antidote to the Inner Critic. It supports self-acceptance and self-esteem. The 4 aspects of the Inner Champion are:
- Strength: Harnessing our strength to set limits on the critic by asserting itself to stop the attacks.
- Nurtures: the wounded exiles that the critic is protecting or that believe what the critic says.
- Provides perspective to allow you to see your life from a larger view.
- Embracing the kernel of truth: to address necessary issues to improve your life.
This class will help identify the group of parts that make up the Inner Critic Cluster; teach a method of working to heal them; and develop Inner Champion capacities.
This one day program will take place on Tuesday, July 22 from 9:00 AM – 4:30 PM EDT with a lunch break from 12:30 - 1:30 PM EDT.
Participants will receive 6 CEs following their conclusion of the course.
