Stitch and Bitch with Orsola De Castro

Tue 23 Sep 2025 6:30 PM - 9:00 PM The Meeting House, SE15 2UN
Stitch & Bitch
A philosophical mending salon hosted by Orsola de Castro

This evening brings together curious minds to explore the quiet radicalism of visual mending over a shared table. A semi-subversive coming-together of people who care deeply about the theory of the threads that make up our clothes.

Led by the iconic Orsola de Castro, fashion heretic, co-founder of Fashion Revolution, Esthetica and lifelong advocate for the beauty of what already exists, our Stitch & Bitch invites you to think of mending not only as a skill, but as a stance. In a cosy corner of Peckham at the beautiful The Meeting House, join the collective for a tiny rebellion.

The Event:

Let’s be clear: this is not a sewing workshop, this is about much more than fixing physical holes.

Forget YouTube hacks and darning tutorials, this is more ideas over instructions. We would love you to bring along some mending to share or sew and there will be tools for you to do so, but think: readings, collective reflection, curated conversation. Exploring the anatomy of a broken garment as a metaphor for a broken system, (that's the bitching part).

Key Info:

  • An opening provocation & reading by Orsola on the infinite possibilities of mending
  • A communal table curated with mending tools.
  • Good conversations, flowing wine & mediterranean canapés

Orsola answers 5 questions on the event:

1) What would you LOVE to talk about at the event?

"About repairs and reparations. About how in a sea of waste, repairing our clothes prevents them being thrown onto another woman’s land. About mother mending, stitches of wisdom and how taking good care of one’s clothes is like taking good care of oneself."

2) What are the particularly hot topics in the world of mending right now?

"Breaking the stigma: how mending can be seen as the slogan for future generations. One visible repair is like a tattoo of our intentions. A declaration of love, for our clothes, for the people who made them, and for the Earth that we all share."

3) What's the bitchiest stitch?

"The prick that stabs at the status quo."

4) Which item of clothing or accessory do you find is the most rewarding to mend?

"No preference, it varies according to my mood and that of my wardrobe."

5) And when is an item of clothing past rescuing?

"Never. I wear broken clothes. Embracing the fray – a tear like an embroidery, threadbare fabric exposing its weave, its essence. A dropped hemline making a straight line become an undulating lullaby. A breakage opening up a passage from my skin to the rest of the world. I am hole."
