BSO Season 4 - Heart Cry
Our Season 4 Concert will be a very special one. Together with our friends from Brisbane Chorale, the Orchestra will present a selection of works which will allow time for reflection on past events. The opening of the concert, Samuel Barber’s “Adagio for Strings”, is well known for it’s beauty and solemnity and has been used at many important occasions, including the funerals of Albert Einstein and Princess Grace of Monaco, as well as at the opening ceremony of the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, and various memorial services for the victims of the 9/11 terror attacks. This will segue into Milhud’s “Meurtre d'un chef d'etat”, written in memory of President John F. Kennedy. Turning closer to home, the orchestra will perform Sculthorpe’s “Earth Cry” written as a reflection on Australia. He writes, “We need to attune ourselves to this continent, to listen to the cry of the earth, as the Aborigines have done for many thousands of years. Earth Cry is a straightforward and melodious work.” Arguably one of Sculthorpe’s most recognizable works, the music fluctuates from ritualistic music to that which is more reflective in nature. After interval, the chorale will join the orchestra to perform the epic “Stabat Mater” by Welsh composer, Karl Jenkins. This work is based on the 13th Century Stabat Mater prayer which reflects on the suffering Mary felt as her son was crucified. It is a fascinating work, combining a mixture of languages and Middle Eastern instruments to assist in representing her Hebrew origins.
This concert will also feature a guest conductor, Stephanie Smith.
