Dive into the art of Collaborative Vocal Improvisation (CVI) on this six-week course in Bristol.
Six sessions: every Thursday from 16 Oct to 20 Nov – Only 12 places available.
CVI is the practice of spontaneously creating vocal music with others. Resting into the aliveness of our bodies, and fertile silence, we allow improvised song to arise from our collective imagination.
We'll share CVI “forms”, playful structures that allow us to improvise and collaborate with clarity, and develop core skills for creating music with coherence and beauty.
At first, it can feel daunting, so we'll take very good care of ourselves, gently warming up and finding our healthy stretch zones for learning. Once you gain some confidence with the forms and see how much freedom there is in this dynamic, playful, and deeply expressive approach, it can be life-changing.
Over six weeks you’ll:
- Learn the key CVI forms, techniques and practices
- Build confidence to sing from silence into improvised song
- Explore ways of making beautiful, playful and prayerful music together
Course / Singing requirements
This is a beginner-friendly course – no prior improv or CVI experience is needed. We simply ask that you’ve done a little singing before, and feel comfortable holding a tune and a steady rhythm. There’s absolutely no need for music theory – everything is taught through the body and the ear.
At the same time, the exercises are designed to meet you at your own learning edge – so if you already have some CVI or improvisation experience, there will be plenty of space to deepen and expand your practice.
We know singing can feel like a tender and sensitive area, possibly with past painful experiences in the mix, so please don’t hesitate to reach out if you’d like to chat through any concerns.
By the end of the course you’ll have a toolkit of CVI forms and the confidence to co-create magical music in the moment.
✨ Join us to discover freedom, connection and joy in collaborative improvised song.
