Grand Tourists to Turner" is a major European art exhibition held at the Villa Vauban in Luxembourg. Running from July 4 to October 11, the exhibit explores how 18th-century "Grand Tour" travels and Romanticism revolutionized landscape painting. It features work by J.M.W. Turner and British peers.
Key Highlights of the Exhibition
- The Shift in Travel: Historically, wealthy young men took the "Grand Tour" to Italy to study antiquity and the Renaissance. By the 19th century, tastes shifted toward romantic, dramatic landscapes in places like the Swiss Alps and the Rhine. [1, 2, 3]
- Turner's Luxembourg Views: The exhibit features seven rare gouache views of Luxembourg City. These were inspired by Turner's travels through the country in 1824 and 1839. [1]
- Famous Contemporaries: The showcase is done in cooperation with the Tate. It includes works by British artists like Joseph Wright of Derby and Francis Towne.
