Weekend retreat for Brixton men

The culture of practice and friendship amongst men has been building in Brixton for sometime. Now it's starting to flower and fruit in all sorts of wonderful and inspiring ways. 

If you've been part of the community in the last years you have been part of that growth and flowering. This autumn we want to celebrate and deepen that culture with Brixton's first ever weekend retreat for men.

We'll be exploring the teaching of Padmasambhava, Tibet's most famous and beloved guru, and his no-nonsense approach to gaining spiritual insight.

FAQs

What are my transport/parking options for getting to and from the event?

There will be no coach for this retreat. We will offer more information about the easiest routes to travel, so that you can co-ordinate your travel together. 

Rivendell is located at Chillies Lane, High Hurstwood, East Sussex, TN22 4AB.

What's included in the cost?

The cost of the retreat includes all food, accommodation and bedding. Meditation mats, cushions and blankets are provided (you could also meditate on a chair) and there are some yoga mats and blocks available to borrow.

Living Communally

Living communally is an important and enjoyable element of the retreat. We will eat together as a community and accommodation will be in multiple occupancy single-sex rooms, with regularly cleaned shared amenities. We require couples to stay in separate rooms. 

The team leading the retreat are volunteers who are on retreat as well, not paid staff. In order to enable us all to live together comfortably and to keep the retreat running smoothly, we ask everyone to help out with some simple chores. Our retreats are known for being friendly and harmonious; we ask retreatants to cooperate with one another and to refrain from harsh speech or anti-social behaviour. It is also important that retreatants commit to attending the full period of the retreat to maintain the integrity of the community and atmosphere.

Diet

The food on the retreat will be vegan. Please don't bring any meat or fish with you. We can only cater for specific dietary requests if there are medical reasons for them. If you do need a special diet then we must be notified as soon as possible, ideally when booking, and at least one week before the retreat starts.

What's the refund policy?

if you decide to cancel, we will refund the full cost of your booking minus a deposit of £40 up to seven days before event. With less than seven days before the event we are unable provide a refund.

Is there disabled access?

Rivendell is housed in old Victorian rectory which can unfortunately create access issues for some people. We currently have one shared downstairs bedroom, which has the use of a bathroom 9 metres down the hallway. This bathroom has an 8cm step up to the shower which also has a seat and handrails. This bathroom also has a toilet with handrails.

Wheel chair ramps can be put in place, if needed, as outside access on all external doorways is up one or two steps. There are handrails on all steps. Some doorways inside the house are 70cm wide. The shrine room is situated in a separate building 12 metres from the main house. The garden is on a hill and is accessible via steps with hand rails. The main lawn directly outside the house is accessible to wheelchair users.

For hearing aid users there is a hearing loop installed in the shrine room and main lounge.
