Meditation Day for Women Mitras
Pan-London Day for Women Mitras: The first women followers of the Buddha
with the London Mitra Convenors
By Donation - suggested £25-£45
Saturday 24th Oct | 10.30am - 3.30pm
Brixton Buddhist Centre
The London Mitra convenors have been dreaming up a day when all the London Mitras can come together, get to know one another, practise and explore the Dharma together. And with Brixton having recently (almost!) secured their new centre, we thought it would be especially lovely to gather there.
Our theme for the day will be The first women followers of the Buddha.
The early Buddhist tradition is full of inspiring women who heard the Buddha’s teaching, took it deeply to heart and forged their own paths to awakening. From the Buddha’s foster mother Mahāpajāpatī Gotamī to the many remarkable women whose stories are preserved in the Therīgāthā, we’ll explore the lives, practice and awakening of some of the first women to follow the Buddha.
There will be plenty of time for meditation, exploration, discussion and getting to know other Mitras from across London – as well as time simply to enjoy being together.
Come and join us for a day of practice, friendship, inspiration and connection with the wider London Mitra Sangha.

FAQ
- Can I come if I'm not a Mitra?
For an event like this, we ask that attendees have made the commitment to become a Mitra in the Triratna Buddhist Order
- Do I have to attend the whole day?
Ideally, everyone taking part will attend the whole day in order to keep a sense of momentum and a closed space for practice. If you need to leave early please try to do so in one of the breaks so as not to disturb the meditations.
- What if I can't afford to come?
This day retreat is open to all women Mitras, with a suggested or recommended donation. We do this so that anyone experiencing serious financial difficulties can book on without giving any donation at all if they cannot afford to do so.
Obviously our events do require money to run, so we rely on the generous donations from those that can afford to pay full cost, in order to subsidise those who cannot afford to do so. This is in accordance with the Buddhist principle of open-handed generosity. We are pleased to say that in the many years we have run events in this way, most people decide to give, and those that are unable to do so are very appreciative of the opportunity to attend our courses.
