Suntuo Susso & The Gambian Superstars (Supported by Morag Butler Quartet) (Concert)

Fri 14 Aug 2026 7:30 PM - 10:00 PM Queens Road Baptist Church, CT10

A master of the kora and a proud 74th-generation griot from The Gambia, Suntou Susso is a musician whose lineage stretches back centuries. His music acts as a breathtaking bridge between the deep, oral histories of West Africa and the modern, multicultural sounds of his current home in the UK. Suntou’s command of the 21-string harp-lute is masterful, weaving intricate, rippling melodies that are both meditative and rhythmic. On stage, his warmth and virtuosity create an atmosphere of grace and celebration. He brings a contemporary edge to his griot heritage, ensuring the ancient sounds of the kora feel fresh and vital. Expect a performance of profound beauty and rhythmic elegance that speaks a universal language of harmony.

At Broadstairs Suntou will be joined by his legendary all Gambian born band “The Gambian Superstars”. Their first time in the UK, this 8 piece delivers an exquisite fusion of traditional West African folk with a healthy dosage of funk and jazz, creating an awe inspiring, euphoric experience that is simply unforgettable to any audience.

Morag Butler has been a member of the British Folk scene for over 30 years. After moving to Margate, and establishing an exciting new folk venue, Rosslyn Court, she has become known for her pure folk vocal sound and thoughtful interpretations of great songs from the folk repertoire.

Many of the established musicians who appear at Rosslyn Court immediately recognised and encouraged her immense talent. Among these were local Margate residents Peter Doherty and Carl Barat of The Libertines.  They subsequently asked Morag to open shows for them at Dreamland Margate, Paris Olympia and in Newcastle - the city in which Morag grew up.

A demand for recorded material became apparent and recently Morag released her eponymous first EP to rave reviews. Hear Morag and her ensemble of local musicians play the new album at folk festivals this summer.

Morag runs the Broadstairs Folk Week Folk Club from 3-5 every afternoon in the Sailing Club. Drop in to book a floor spot.
