Broken Bridges Bat Night

*Ticket sales will end at 5pm on Wed 1st July, unless sold out earlier*
Join us to learn about and look for bats at Broken Bridges Nature Reserve. We’ll meet on the Bemerton side and start with a short introductory talk about bats. Then we’ll set off on a guided mini adventure around the reserve, hearing and seeing bats (and more!) along the way.
Everyone will get a chance to use one of our special bat detectors - a clever piece of kit which brings bats’ high-pitched calls down to a frequency we humans can hear.
This event is part of Safer and Supportive Salisbury's Breathing Spaces programme of events - a city-wide celebration of wellbeing, nature and mini outdoor adventures with free and low-cost activities for all ages.
"Thank you for a wonderful evening with the bat detectors! And a lovely mindfulness moment, when a bat swooped down just before the end of the quiet meditation."
Who is it for?
This event is suitable for anyone interested in wildlife and wellbeing who wants to spend time in nature with others, learning new things. Please share any medical, mobility or other needs on booking, so we can plan activities that are suitable for all.
Where?
We will meet at the Bemerton end of Broken Bridges, near 42 Lower Road, SP2 9NQ. The route will be roughly 1 mile on uneven ground. The path is narrow in places. It may be muddy or wet underfoot.
Please arrive on foot if you can. This is a residential area with limited parking. If you do drive, please park respectfully.
What to bring
- Dress for the weather. We will be outside for the duration of the session. Please check the weather forecast and bring waterproofs and warm layers. If it has rained, sturdy walking boots or wellies will be best if you have them (or old trainers you don't mind getting muddy).
- You may want to bring a torch (although we’ll try and keep torches off as much as possible, to optimise our night vision and wildlife spotting potential!).
- Bring a bat detector if you have one.
- Guide dogs are welcome but no other dogs please.
Cost
Please make a donation - pay what you feel.
FAQs
Do we go ahead in the rain?
We believe in getting out whatever the weather! Please assume the session is going ahead unless you hear otherwise by email the day before. We may postpone if the weather forecast is really wet/stormy, but will go ahead in most weathers e.g. light rain, showers. Always check the weather forecast and dress for the weather.
What if I'm late?
Please aim to arrive ready to start at the start time. We'll start at the location below by sharing some bat facts before heading off on a mini adventure.
Why can't I bring my dog?
Guide dogs are welcome but no other dogs please. This is because wildlife is likely to be disturbed by the presence of dogs.
