Brussels Student Orchestra teams up with the Ballet Etoko

The newly created Brussels Student Orchestra presents its first production in collaboration with the Ballet Etoko. Music by the African American composer Florence Price will be brought to life by the passionate students of the Brussels conservatories and energetic Congolese percussionists and dancers of Etoko ballet troupe!

Concert program: The First

Our programme is centered around two "Firsts". Ludwig van Beethoven, with his First Symphony, would go on to define the Romantic symphonic genre for centuries to come. His First Symphony was a pivotal moment in symphonic music history, published on the cusp of a new era of personal artistic expression. Exactly 131 years later, in 1932, Florence Price completed her First Symphony in Chicago. At once continuing the lineage of great symphonies started by Beethoven, as well as incorporating unique sounds and colours drawn from her African-American identity, Price would go on to be one of the first great original American composers. Her works have largely been forgotten, until a discovery of old manuscripts in 2009 revived interest in her work. Now, her works are steadily making their way in the mainstream repertoire, deservedly so.

About us

The Brussels Student Orchestra is made up of conservatory students, graduates, amateurs, and young musicians. Our ambition is to grow into a big change maker in the lives and education of Brussels' youth. Our organization is unique: it consists of both semi-professional musicians, all students at one of Brussels' higher institutions for music (the KCB or CRB), and of amateurs and young musicians studying at a music academy or otherwise passionate about music. In our orchestra, the semi-professional players take up a mentorship role toward the junior players. This way, the experienced musicians will be actively engaged in making a positive impact on the next generation of musicians, whereas the junior members will have the unique opportunity to play at a very high level. The orchestra is aimed at young students who want to be challenged and have strong ambitions for their academic or professional futures. We welcome everyone regardless of background, especially those young musicians who otherwise don't have the means to attend extracurricular workshops, such as orchestra stages. This concert is conducted by Simon Pu, with guest soloist Belen Fos. Follow us on Instagram: @BrusselsStudentOrchestra or Facebook
