Title: Terrorism and violent extremism as key players in the removal of illegal content from the internet

Abstract:

The Internet has meant that many crimes that are committed physically are now transferred to an online format. This is the case of terrorism and violent extremism through the dissemination of online content with a common denominator: encouraging violence among its followers. Some research indicates that violence is the main objective of both phenomena and is the necessary and characteristic element when defining them. With the advent and development of the Internet and social networks, illegal content has become exceptionally widespread, forcing the European Union to adopt measures in response, must notably Regulation (EU) 2021/784 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 29 April 2021. This regulation created a common framework for the removal of illegal content of a terrorist and violent extremist nature on the Internet.

Spain, through the Centre for Intelligence against Terrorism and Organised Crime (CITCO) as the competent authority, became the first country to issue EU withdrawal orders in 2023. Presenting research carried out at CITCO, the main objective of this talk is to consider the functioning of the Regulation on the removal of terrorist and violent extremism content on the Internet, from a Spanish perspective. With this objective in mind, it will answer the following question: What is the nature of terrorist and violent extremist content that is removed from the Internet in Spain?
