Negotiating Media Attention: Problems and Possibilities for Researchers Working on Hate
Researchers working on hate, extremism and related forms of social harm are increasingly navigating complex relationships with the media. Media attention can provide valuable opportunities to communicate research findings, shape public debate and challenge harmful narratives, but it can also create risks for researchers, particularly when working on contentious or politically sensitive topics.
This event will explore the problems and possibilities associated with media engagement for researchers working in such fields. Drawing on recent experiences, Dr Aaron Winter (Lancaster University) will lead the discussion and consider how researchers can navigate media attention while protecting their safety and wellbeing, maintaining academic integrity, and communicating research responsibly in challenging public contexts.
This is the first event hosted by CHANGE, the Collaborative Hate Activist Network for Generating Engagement. Aaron will give a 40-minute presentation reflecting on the challenges and opportunities of media engagement, followed by a roundtable discussion involving everyone in attendance. The session will provide space to consider practical experiences, dilemmas and strategies for researchers navigating public and media attention.
