Blue Nose Winter Tour: Ship's Archaeology
Multiple dates and times
The Buffalo and Erie County Naval and Military Park, 14202
Description
Join the Buffalo Naval and Military Park's Curator and Director of Museum Collections, Shane Stephenson, for a special tour that highlights the important modifications and changes made to USS Little Rock and USS The Sullivans over time. Each was constructed for World War II but spent most of their service protecting America and its interests during the Cold War. With the frequent technological advancements made throughout this time the U.S. Navy made several changes to each ship. You’ll examine many of these changes, and the archaeology behind these changes, while seeing spaces not on the regular tour route. Changes to the gun platforms, superstructures, and living spaces are included. You’ll also learn about the development of the changing strategies as we transitioned from World War II to the Cold War, and each ship’s role.
Each tour will last approximately 2 hours and will be limited to 11 people.
When touring most areas of the ship, visitors should expect to traverse narrow passageways, be able to step over significantly raised thresholds, and climb up and down very steep ladders. We recommend that you wear warm and comfortable clothes, closed-toe shoes, and bring a flashlight. Due to the length of the tour and the spaces that will be visited, this tour is not recommended for those under 11 years of age.
The Buffalo Naval Park reserves the right to close the ships to visitors for safety concerns. If there is a cancellation due to weather conditions or safety issues, you will be notified and a refund will be issued.
