🌲 Winter Lore & Legends: Wreath Making

Step into Dorset Falconry Park's cosy cabin for an atmospheric winter workshop of folklore, festive greenery and traditional wreath making.

Why do we bring evergreens into our homes during the darkest part of the year? Why are holly and ivy so entwined with winter celebrations? What does a spider's silver web have to do with Christmas? And what stories, superstitions and old traditions have grown around the plants, creatures and decorations we still bring into our homes today?

We'll explore some of the fascinating winter lore and legends behind wreaths and seasonal greenery, separating folklore from history and discovering how our relationship with the natural world has shaped midwinter traditions.

Then you'll create your own beautiful natural winter wreath to take home, using seasonal greenery and a selection of natural decorations.

A short presentation will explore:

🌿 Evergreens and their symbolism through the winter months
🔴 Holly, ivy, berries and other traditional winter plants
🕷️ Spiders, silver webs and a rather lovely Christmas legend
🕯️ Old customs, superstitions and protective folklore
🍊 Natural seasonal decorations and the stories behind them
🌲 How winter traditions have changed and travelled through time

Then, on to wreath-making!

No previous wreath-making experience is needed. Come along, get creative and leave with your own piece of winter greenery, along with a few curious stories to tell when somebody asks why it's hanging on your door.

This workshop is designed to be enjoyed by adults and older children alike. It's a lovely opportunity to slow down, spend some time together and share a traditional seasonal craft, perhaps even creating a new family tradition along the way. Whether you come with a child, parent, grandparent, friend or simply by yourself, settle in with a warming drink, discover some curious winter tales and create something beautiful to take home 🌲

All materials are provided. Feel free to bring any special embellishments you'd like to add, and sharp scissors or secateurs if you have them.

Seasonal refreshments are included, with a warming non-alcoholic mulled drink and a mince pie to enjoy while you work.

🌿 How tickets work

Tickets are per wreath rather than per person, so you can come along by yourself or make your wreath together with someone else.

Each wreath ticket admits a maximum of two people. This helps us keep the cabin cosy rather than sardine festive. 🐟🎄

Adults and older children are welcome, making this a lovely activity to share with a partner, friend, parent, grandparent or older child.
