Traditional Lime Mortars in Practice: Mixing, Repointing & Minor Wall Consolidation

BLFI members and non-members are invited to join the second of our practical two-day summer workshops, combining classroom sessions with hands-on construction training in the traditional use of lime.

The workshop will be delivered by experienced craftspeople and conservation professionals, and will explore the practical application of traditional lime mortars in the repair and conservation of historic buildings.

Set within the historic Slane Castle estate, Co. Meath, this workshop will focus on mortar mixing, repointing, and minor wall consolidation on one of the high limestone walls of the former walled garden. Lectures and theory sessions will take place within the castle.

This is a unique opportunity to learn traditional techniques in an authentic heritage setting, combining practical skills with an understanding of appropriate conservation approaches.

Whether you are a property owner, student, contractor, plasterer, mason, or heritage professional — or you have staff members who would benefit from upskilling — this workshop offers valuable practical experience and knowledge. It is also suitable for those with a strong interest in traditional construction who wish to develop their understanding further.

The workshop will be delivered in a friendly, collaborative atmosphere, encouraging discussion, knowledge sharing, and hands-on learning.
