Building Thinking Classrooms - Part 2: Next Steps

You have done the hard work of getting a Thinking Classroom off the ground. You have randomized your groups, moved students to the walls, and started selecting better tasks. Now what?

This full-day workshop is designed for educators who have attended an Introduction to Building Thinking Classrooms session and have begun implementing these practices in their classrooms. Whether your first attempts went smoothly or left you with more questions than answers, this is the session where we slow down, troubleshoot, and go deeper.

The content will feel familiar — but the conversation is completely different when you are coming in with real classroom experience. We will revisit the foundational practices through that lens, then layer in the next set of research-backed moves that take a Thinking Classroom from functional to fluid, including:

• Defronting the Classroom: Releasing students from teacher-dependence once and for all.
• How We Give Tasks: The when, where, and how of launching tasks to maximize thinking from the first moment.
• Being Intentionally Less Helpful: The counterintuitive art of stepping back so students step up.
• Creating and Managing Flow: Keeping every student in productive struggle — not just the ones in the middle.
• Consolidation and Notes: Closing lessons and capturing learning in ways that actually stick.

You will spend time in the doing before the discussing — experiencing these moves as a learner so you can bring them back to your classroom with confidence.

Is this a standalone workshop? This session is designed for educators who have already attended an Introduction to BTC workshop. If you are brand new to the research, we recommend starting with Part 1.

Do I need the book? The Building Thinking Classrooms book is a helpful companion. If you did not purchase a copy at Part 1, you may add one at checkout for $44.95.
