Building Thinking Classrooms - Part 3: Assessment

By now, you have spent months building a classroom where students think. They are at the walls, working in random groups, tackling rich tasks, and staying in productive struggle longer than you ever thought possible. There is just one problem: your assessment and reporting practices may not yet reflect any of that.

This is where everything you have built gets put to the test. Part capstone, part deep dive — we will revisit the full arc of Building Thinking Classrooms practices, troubleshoot what is still sticky, and turn our attention to the hardest question in the work: how do you evaluate and report on learning in a way that actually reflects what you value?

We will explore the final practices of the BTC framework:

• Evaluate What You Value: If it matters in your classroom, it should matter on your assessments.
• Communicate Where Students Are and Where They Are Going: Feedback that actually moves students forward.
• Report Based on Data, Not Points: Making your report card honest, defensible, and consistent with your practice.

You will leave with a clearer picture of how assessment fits into a Thinking Classroom — and practical tools to start shifting your practice before the school year ends. This is not the end of the journey. It is where the real work begins.

This workshop is Part 3 of a three-part series. We recommend attending Part 1: Introduction (Sept 24) and Part 2: Next Steps (Oct 16) first, though some prior exposure to BTC practices is sufficient.
