SELF-TYING INTENSIVE
Explore, Play, Fly

This workshop will explore the art of self-tying and self-suspension on a single point. You will learn how to build expressive and embodied solo scenes both on the ground and in the air. It will deep dive into the why behind the ropes we tie on ourself — to evoke different feelings, desires, eroticism, pleasure, pain — and create a space to bring these to the surface.

Participants will learn techniques to take themselves safely into the air and get creative with gravity. We will create a range of positions and transitions to play with and adapt according to your unique style, skill, desires and preferences.

The workshop will cover:

  • Self-tying fundamentals: fluid rope handling, body mechanics, secure anchor points and efficient frictions

  • Self-suspension fundamentals: securing uplines to harnesses and hard points, managing energy

  • Safety: Risks, anatomy and self-consent

  • Body awareness: Exploring sensation, movement, breath and tension as tools to build proprioception and body management

  • Creativity: Developing both freeform rope skills and structured harnesses for personal expression and aesthetics

Date:
Saturday 2nd & Sunday 3rd May

Time:

Saturday 2nd May: 12pm - 6pm
Sunday 3rd May: 12.30pm - 5.30pm

Venue:
Momentum Pole & Aerial Studio, Unit 54b Morelands Trading Estate, Gloucester GL1 5RZ

Getting there:
The venue is on an industrial estate with plenty of free parking on the weekend. From Gloucester train station it is a 17 minute bus or 25 minute walk.

Accessibility:
The studio is on the first floor which is accessible by a flight of stairs and unfortunately no lift available. There is a gender-neutral toilet in the studio, with further toilets in the shared hallway. There is a small sofa area and kitchenette with access to water and hot drinks. If you have any other queries, please email burgundyroserope@gmail.com who will answer your questions.

Prerequisites:
Participants should already know a single column tie, have a good working knowledge of handling, frictions, tension and building basic harnesses. The workshop will be suitable for beginners in the journey of self-tying and self-suspension, but not total beginners to rope. Suspension comes with a lot of risks, and while we will discuss these in the workshop, participants need to be confident in taking that step in their journey.

Bring:
- At least 6-8 hanks of jute/hemp rope (no cotton or nylon, and at least x2 hanks suitable for uplines)
- A sling, a suspension ring and at least x1 carabiner
- Safety shears
- Notebook and pen to take notes

Optional:

- A swivel if you are interested in spinning
- Carabiners for upline management

Note:
Self-suspension is demanding on the body and energy levels so please eat a good brunch before arriving and have snacks throughout the day. There will be a lunch break in the middle of the day, and short comfort breaks throughout depending on the group energy levels.

Refunds: If you can no longer come to the class after booking, you can cancel your ticket and receive a full refund up to 14 days prior to the event. You must email burgundyroserope@gmail.com by the 18th April. Any cancellations after this date will not be refunded.

About Burgundy Rose

Burgundy Rose is a rope switch, facilitator and artist interested in using the body as a tool for expression. They have a background in the performing arts, and this influences their approach to ropes and style. Dynamic, playful and attentive, they are endlessly curious about the body and thrives on the intensities - physical and psychological - that rope can bring out.

Burgundy Rose started learning Shibari in 2016 at Anatomie Studio in London, and has learnt from an extensive range of international educators and collaborators. They are currently most inspired by blending the intensity and aesthetics of ‘traditional’ Japanese Shibari with a more movement-based and deconstructed ‘contemporary’ style.

In 2019 Burgundy Rose was awarded a ‘Developing Your Creative Practice’ grant from Arts Council England to spend a period of time exploring rope, dance and physical theatre where they trained with Jasmin Vardimon Dance Theatre Company (JV Intensive) and with Arnoys Nicolas, a rope artist in Brussels.

Their shibari teaching and creative performances have taken them across London, Manchester, Bristol, Berlin, Prague, Athens, Rotterdam, Copenhagen and Portland (USA).
