Creating a Micro Nursery from 10:30 - 12:30 hrs.

A Visit to Trimplants: Learning from 40+ Years of Commercial Nursery Growing Experience

Community groups are increasingly playing a vital role in building resilient local growing systems through seed swaps, plant propagation, growing seedlings, vegetables and young trees for use across community and public spaces.  This workshop will be held on site, at Trimplants and led by Terry who has developed his wholesale nursery business over the past 40+ years.  We will explore how community groups can create micro nurseries to  grow strong, resilient plants to support local food-growing, food forests, nature based and sustainable projects.

The session will cover practical growing skills, including growing mediums, sustainable substrates, biosecurity, climate change challenges, the use of compost teas, natural solutions, while also exploring local opportunities and constraints. Participants will leave with ideas and practical next steps for developing their community-led micro nursery or growing spaces.

Practical Biochar Workshop:  13:00-16:00 hrs:

A practical biochar making session at the Blackdown Hills Eco Hub / Trimplants using their new kilns, Dartmoor Dragons and the Tawi Stoves.

Discover the art and science of biochar in this practical workshop where you'll see their tailor-made kilns, Dartmoor Dragons, and Tawi Stoves in action. Through this practical experience, explore methods that build soil and lock up carbon at small and medium scales, transforming local waste into biochar that increases plant health and yields, supports beneficial soil microbe habitat, increases resilience in tree whips, while improving nutrient/moisture holding, and aeration of soil.

Please dress up warmly, bring thick gardening gloves. secateurs and wear waterproof clothing/footwear.
