What the world needs now is cake, sweet cake…
Cake reminds us that that beauty comes in layers. That joy doesn’t have to be complicated. That maybe, just maybe, a room full of cake can make the world feel a little better.
What is CakeMixer?
A mixer is a friendly, informal get-together. Now, add cake. This is CakeMixer. It’s not a bake-off. It’s not a contest. It’s a midsummer daydream, generous, and full of wonder.
Inspired by Elisa Sunga’s Cake Picnic, CakeMixer is a love letter to cake in all its forms—tall, short, frosted, naked, store-bought, homemade, imperfect, glorious. Whether it’s a jiggly mango chiffon or a dense chocolate loaf, a delicate gluten-free almond sponge or a neon supermarket sheet cake, if it’s cake we’re into it.
How it works:
You register to secure your spot and show up with a cake. That’s it. It can be made by you, your roommate, your favourite bakery—no judgment, just joy. Once inside, everyone shares, slices, samples, and swoons. Cake is a non-negotiable entry requirement. Sorry, no cake tourists!
Enter to win doorprizes from our lovely sponsors Epiphany Cakes , L&C French Bakery, Nelson Stitch Lab & Bellaflora Studio!
A portion of ticket sales + all proceeds from our by-donation Oso Negro Coffee station go to the Nelson Community Food Centre!

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
I want to come! What do I do?
Click the REGISTER button and get yourself sorted. We only have so much room, so registering secures your spot. To get in to CakeMixer, you MUST bring a whole, uncut cake. Only registered folks WITH a cake in arms get in the door.
Can I bring a friend?
You can, but if they're unregistered and cakeless—you’ll have to leave them at the door. Good news: you can always take your spoils to the beach and share it after the CakeMixer.
What kind of cakes are allowed?
All the cakes. Savoury ones, welcome too! Make sure you label your cake - go artsy or utilitarian - but do tell us what you brought.
Does size matter? This time, yes.
All cakes must be at least 6 inches/15 cm wide.
If your cake is exactly 6 inches/15 cm wide, it must be at least 5 inches/13 cm tall.
If your cake is wider than 6 inches (up to 13+ inches/33+ cms), it must be at least 3 inches /8cm tall.
Please bring a knife and cake lifter or offset spatula (something to serve your cake) - we'll hook you up with everything else!
Do I have to bake it myself?
Nope. Buy one, borrow one, bribe a baker—we don’t mind. If you plan to order a cake from one of our incredible local bakeries, remember June is wedding cake season, so order well in advance!

Can cakes be gluten-free?
Yes! We love all cakes, including gluten-free, dairy-free, nut-free—just label ingredients so fellow eaters can make informed choices.
Can I bring more than one cake?
We cannot think of a single drawback to more cake. So, yes. A thousand times yes.
Can I bring cupcakes, slices, or half a cake?
Nope. It’s gotta be a whole uncut cake—it keeps the experience magical and easy to share. Persmaps, we can do a CupcakeMixer one day—just not today.
Why is there a registration fee?
Your registration fee juuuuust helps cover the essentials—hall rental, insurance, and all the little behind-the-scenes costs that make an event like this happen. As for profits? We’re pretty confident there won't be any. Thankfully, we're content with good vibes and shared slices of cake.
Midsummer CakeMixer is sold out—what now?!
We know, it's a bummer. We'd love to fit everyone in, but there's only so much cake our space can handle. That said, all is not lost: you can volunteer (yes, we fully believe in "will work for cake" deals)--just shoot us an email . Or join the waitlist for a future CakeMixer.
