New technologies to detect single molecules and help diagnose disease
with Dr Shenglin Cai, Postdoctoral Researcher at the University of CambridgeMolecules in our bodies can provide important clues about our health. Detecting them individually, one molecule at a time, could help researchers identify signs of disease.
Dr Shenglin Cai, Postdoctoral Researcher at the University of Cambridge, will explore how new technologies can detect single molecules with greater sensitivity, analyse more samples efficiently and use smaller amounts of sample material. He will explain how techniques such as nanopores, optical microscopy and microfluidics can be combined to detect different types of molecules directly from human samples, including proteins, microRNAs and viral RNA.
The talk will also highlight the potential of these technologies to support the diagnosis of diseases such as cancer, viral infections and neurodegenerative conditions.
This session will be Chaired by Wes Robertson, Group Leader at MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology.
About our innovation breakfasts
Our Innovation Breakfast series brings together aspiring innovators and clinicians with expert speakers to explore what it takes to turn a great idea into something that can make a difference for patients.
From industry partners and technical specialists to those who have been successful entrepreneurs with a story to share, join us to network, learn and enjoy a pastry.
Who Should Come?
We encourage attendance from:
- Staff across our partner organisations
- Innovators and people with an idea they would like to develop
- Professionals focused on service improvement
- Leaders in strategy, policy, and partnerships
- Colleagues working on public and patient involvement and engagement (PPIE)
