MotC Coders' Workshop

Mon 9 Nov 2026 9:00 AM - Mon 15 Feb 2027 5:00 PM GMT Online, Zoom

Starts 9 November 2026. Online.

This workshop offers structured coding practice on Meaning of the Child Interview transcripts. It is intended for those working towards reliability, those who are already reliable and would like to keep their coding active, and those who would like further supported practice. The transcripts are drawn from MotC research, so taking part also contributes to ongoing research using the MotC.

How it works

Participants are placed in small coding groups, the size depending on numbers, each of which includes reliable MotC coders. Each group codes six transcripts, one a fortnight. Those who would like to code weekly join two groups, which run on staggered fortnights.

Feedback from the reliable coders in each group is collated by Dr Ben Grey after each transcript.

A lunchtime Q&A webinar with Dr Ben Grey runs fortnightly on Wednesdays, 1 to 2pm UK time, to discuss the transcripts and questions arising from coding. Webinars are recorded for those unable to attend.

Webinar dates: 18 November, 2 December and 16 December 2026; 6 January, 20 January and 3 February 2027.

There is no coding over Christmas week.

Who can attend

The workshop is open to anyone who has completed the full MotC course or the Coding the MotC course. Reliable coders are particularly welcome, as each group needs reliable coders to anchor the discussion and provide feedback, and so attendance is free for them.

Cost and booking

Free for reliable MotC coders, who are contributing their expertise to the learning and the research.
£150 for those working towards reliability who code fortnightly, in one group.
£200 for those working towards reliability who code weekly, in two groups.
£50 for students and those who are unwaged who are working towards reliability.

Please choose the ticket that matches your status, reliable coder or working towards reliability, and whether you would like to code fortnightly or weekly.

Terms and conditions

All transcripts used in the workshop are anonymised. However, as they are derived from real research contexts, booking a place indicates your agreement that transcripts, and any material relating to them, will not be shared or circulated beyond your training group.

Course tutor: Dr Ben Grey, with support from reliable coders.
