Gesualdo Six
Owain Park director
The spacious Gothic Revival interior of OLEM (Our Lady and the English Martyrs) is the perfect setting for this wide-ranging programme of choral music from the 15th to 21st centuries including works by Henry Purcell, William Byrd, Thomas Tallis, Eleanor Daley, John Tavener and Richard Rodney Bennett. The Gesualdo Six is an award-winning British vocal ensemble comprising some of the UK’s finest consort singers. Praised for their imaginative programming and impeccable blend, the Gesualdo Six were formed in 2014 for a performance in Cambridge of Gesualdo’s Tenebrae Responsories. They have gone on to perform at numerous major festivals across the UK, Europe, North America and Australia.
Their programme touches on grief, and the music selected explores responses to mourning and loss, focussing on three perspectives: uncertainty, acknowledgement and hope. This is a sequence of music for the souls of the departed, to be heard by those who remember them.
Ingeniously programmed and impeccably delivered, with that undefinable excitement that comes from a group of musicians working absolutely as one. Gramophone, 2020
