Join us for this weaving workshop with Thornhill-based tapestry artist Gyllian Thomson.
Gyllian will lead two workshops at Cample this summer which take inspiration from Katie Schwab's beautiful small wares & hard wares.
Comprising three narrow woven ribbons that are each 15-20 metres long and made on a 19th century band loom at the TextielLab in the Netherlands, small wares & hard wares is rich in detail - showing all the faults and breaks that were a part of the making of the work alongside areas of exposed warp and delicate areas of fine pattern.
In this session, Gyllian will talk us through the key basic skills and then you will have the chance to work on your own woven ribbon. We will work on small wooden frames, which will be warped up ready to weave. There will also be a chance to have a close look at small wares & hard wares with Gyllian and look at the different techniques used to weave it.
Gyllian Thomson graduated in 1995 with a First-Class Bachelor of Design in Constructed Textiles with printmaking from Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art, Dundee. She earned a Post Graduate Certificate in Education in Art and Design from the University of Glasgow in 2001. Having swapped Glasgow for the countryside of Dumfries and Galloway, her studio is attached to her home making her responses to the landscape even more immediate. Gyllian set up her studio four years ago, weaving unique handmade tapestries from her scaffold loom. Sitting at the loom and transitioning her work to tapestry is a slow and quietly joyful process.
