You love your work. It’s your passion. You love leading groups in joyous song, creating joyful and relational moments, and bringing meaning and relevance to prayer and educational settings.
But - does this resonate with you?
I’m shy about money - it feels weird and uncomfortable to talk about. I hate negotiating and money conversations.
I don’t want to upset them - I should be grateful I get paid to do what I love.
I know I undercharge, but I don’t know what to do about it. Or: I’ve been told by friends and family I undercharge, but I can’t bring myself to charge more.
I can’t ask my synagogue for more. I love them / they have no money / they have what they have in their budget / they are a small non-profit / they are struggling / I’m a member / It’s my contribution to the Jewish world.
I care about Jewish music and the participants I work with. If I charge more, and the synagogue won’t pay it, those kids / teens / families / lovely people won’t get the experience I so much want to give them.
I get so much joy and purpose out of doing this. They are paying me to do what I love. That should be enough, right?
I know I can make more, but I feel like I have some blocks in the way.
This is a side gig for me, so it doesn’t matter how much I make.
Or maybe you resonate with these (or both!):
Do you feel burnt out by running from gig to gig?
Love what you do, but aren’t sure you can keep doing it at these rates?
Are you making just enough money to survive?
You’re not sure how to cover all of your expenses with just music.
You never know what to charge - you just take what they offer, even if it feels like not enough.
Have you ever been told you should charge more - maybe even by the person hiring you? Or, on the flip side: have you ever been told you are charging too much, but couldn’t articulate why you felt it was the right rate?
Are you not sure when it’s right to take gigs for less and when to stick to your price and walk away?
Do you work for free or very little - without a clear understanding of WHY you’re doing it for free or for that rate?
Do you feel like you’re lacking mentorship - especially around the business side of being a freelance/gig worker? Do you wonder what others charge - and how in the world they know how much to charge?
Do you wish you had somewhere you could go to talk about all of this, and support, and the community around it?
What if:
You knew exactly how much you should be charging - as a reflection of YOUR energy, time, expertise, values - and VALUE?
The more you earned, the more it helped raise the quality of the programs you lead, the institutions you partner with, and the field of Jewish music as a whole?
You had a community of like-minded people in this niche market to talk with who struggle with the same things that you do and help raise each other up?
Join experienced Jewish songleader Rory Michelle Sullivan and Wealth Consciousness Coach Candis Fox for a two-part workshop rooted deep in intentionality, relationship, and seeds of transformation (?). Let’s make money more aligned, more authentic for you - and more fun!
You will:
Discover your money archetype, based on ancestral patterning.
Learn strategies to assess exactly how much you should be charging per gig - based on YOUR needs AND each institution you work with’s capacity AND what others in the market charge.
Learn how to be in proper relationship with yourself, the organizations you work with and money through honesty and integrity.
Be held by community and seen.
Play with what it would feel like to ask for more, earn more, and have it feel joyful and reciprocally beneficial.
Be supported to take ACTION to ask for appropriate rates in between our sessions and beyond.
Your commitment:
Attendance at both workshops
Openness and willingness to share your experiences - the struggles and the wins - in community
Commitment to implement what you learn to raise us all up together
Share what you are currently charging?
You receive:
Insights into your unique relationship to money
Lifelong change in 1 week: clarity, choice, and alignment with your personal financial values
Two 2-hour workshops in community Value: meet and network with other musicians and community members, dense but thorough exploration of self and community around money, music, and cultural preservation.
Co-creation of community norms and practices - get us more on the same page. Maybe even become the start of a movement!
Better understanding of the market value of your offerings and what others are charging
Results of a survey of what Jewish songleaders charge (this is also available for free from Rory Michelle/Cherie/NewCAJE/Sue?, but we’ll look at it together!)
Handouts outlining strategies and practices to keep your financial wellbeing moving: Negotiation tips that Rory Michelle has collected and used over the years, survey of songleader market rates, letter to synagogues explaining rates and value to help with solidarity

F.A.Q.
Q: I’m not a Jewish music leader, but this resonates with me! Can I join?
A: This workshop will be specifically focused on the Jewish community, and the Jewish communal landscape. If you’re a gig worker who leads Jewish educational or other programming, yes! Please join us - this will be relevant. For those working outside of the Jewish community, we are scheming future programming - please be in touch with us and stay on our mailing lists. Perhaps we can host a similar offering for your group!
Q: I’m not available for one of those dates. Can I still join?
A: You will still get much out of the Dec 4 workshop if you attend that only, though the work and results will be deeper and more with the action and reflection in March 4. If you are only able to attend the March 4 date, email us at xxx to get on our list for future websites. Obviously, if there is an emergency that comes up - we understand!
Q: Will you be Recording this and sending it out after?
A: Yes! These videos will be available on both our websites for download after.
Q: How transformational will this be?
A: As much as you’re willing to put the effort in. We’ll provide suggestions, frameworks, tools, and support for action, integration, and reflection. But it will be up to you to implement it.
Q: You mentioned ancestral healing. How deep does this work go?
A: Candis’s work goes very deep. This workshop will hopefully plant seeds, that when watered and given sunlight, will do their magic. If you want to go deeper and quicker, follow up with Candis for additional offerings at https://howtobewithmoney.com/.
Q: I can’t make this workshop. Will there be more?
A: We are scheming additional offerings. If you are interested, please email Candis and Rory to get on our list to be notified first about future offerings.
