The Program at a Glance
This program brings together three Latin American works and one American work, celebrating composers from Venezuela, Mexico, and the United States.
We begin with Arturo Márquez’s Danzón No. 2, a rhythmically charged work inspired by the traditional Cuban danzón and infused with the colors and energy of Mexican popular music. It is followed by Morton Gould’s Spirituals for Strings, an American classic that honors African American spirituals in a deeply expressive and lyrical string work. Gabriela Ortiz’s La Calaca brings the mystical and celebratory spirit of Mexico’s Day of the Dead to life, blending ritual, catchy rhythms, and cultural symbolism in a vibrant work. The program concludes with Serenade for Strings by Venezuelan composer and pianist Teresa Carreño, an elegant work that showcases her romantic voice.
