Sandbar Series IV
CCCO Sandbar Series IV: Romance & Reckoning St. Christopher’s Church, Chatham Program Notes Johannes Brahms – Piano Quintet in F minor, Op. 34 Brahms’s Piano Quintet in F minor is one of the greatest masterpieces of Romantic chamber music. After several revisions, the composer found its ideal voice in 1864 by combining piano with string quartet. The work is notable for its symphonic power and emotional depth, moving from a dramatic, restless opening movement through a tender Andante, a turbulent Scherzo, and a triumphant finale. Dmitri Shostakovich – Piano Quintet in G minor, Op. 57 Composed in 1940 and premiered with the composer at the piano, Shostakovich’s Piano Quintet earned the Stalin Prize and remains one of his most admired chamber works. Cast in five movements, it opens with a solemn, Bach-inspired Prelude and Fugue, followed by a sardonic Scherzo, a lyrical Intermezzo, and a Finale that mixes playfulness with underlying tension. Together, these two powerful quintets — separated by nearly eighty years — offer a rich contrast: Brahms’s passionate Romanticism alongside Shostakovich’s profound 20th-century introspection. The result is an evening of exceptional musical depth and intimacy. Kiyoshi Hayashi, violinJesse MacDonald, violin |
