About Cub
Cub is an audio story to listen to through headphones in a specially built den installation that can pop up in your school for a whole week. The story is about a child, Kit, who lives with their Mum and Nai Nai (Grandma) and a fox and what happens when their homes flood. The themes of the story and activities are: family, climate change, mixed heritage, connection to the natural world. If you would like to listen to Cub before you book, please get in touch to be sent a private link.
We made Cub with years 3 and 4 from Cottesmore Academy in Rutland, who got to be the first ones to test it out for us when we took back to their school earlier this year. We've worked with children aged 7-9 to make it and we'd recommend it for years 3 to 7 although some older children may enjoy the experience too - we will leave that up to you to decide!
The story is about 16 minutes long and 6-8 children can fit comfortably inside the den. We've tried it out with a whole class rotating activities outside the den while they are waiting to go in in small groups but it's a bit better to experience it in small groups if you can.
Accessibility
We've tried to make Cub as accessible as possible so more children and young people can enjoy and engage with it! We have Audio Description files and a British Sign Language (BSL) version as well as an Access Pack with a Information about what to expect, a Map of the installation, Social Story, Triggers, Emotions and Senses, Tactile Map and Transcript Link. Find our more about accessibility here: www.carbontheatre.org.uk/cub
Practicalities
Our Facilitator will arrive on a Wednesday afternoon to help you unload and set up Cub! She will unpack and help you set up the den and headphones and then run you through how to switch it all on. We will then leave you to it!
All equipment, tools and materials included - all you'll need to provide is a plug socket and a nice space (a hall, library or classroom). Construction takes between 1-2 hours and then you'll be ready to go! We will leave you with some guides, activity resources and a contact number if you need us to help during the week. We do need step-free access as it all arrives in two large flight cases on wheels.
A week later on Wednesday morning, our Facilitator will be back to chat through how it all went and to help you pack down.
Pay What You Can
We are able to offer this experience on a Pay What You Can basis due to our funding, this means it can be free if you need it to be but we'd love a donation towards our project costs if you can.
We are supported with funding from the National Lottery through Arts Council England to create and share Cub with local children and families. We've already popped up in Northampton's Grosvenor Centre and Oakham Library in 2024 and in 2025 we are coming to schools (and maybe more libraries in the holidays too).
Your school does have to be within 30 miles of Corby - if you are slightly further away, please email us to see what we can do!
What next?
Take a look at the weeks available and reserve one - we will then be in touch to book you in, explain all the details and work out terms and payment.
