Walk at Godrevy Warren, Gwithian led by Jacqueline Nowakowski and Martin Rule

Walk at Godrevy Warren, Gwithian. It will be led by Jacqueline Nowakowski (collaborator with the late Professor Charles Thomas) and Martin Rule (Towans Ranger). You will have the opportunity to visit sites which are on private land and not open to the public. It will take place on 8 August starting at 10:30 am, finishing around 2pm. There is no charge and free parking is available.

‘‘Gwithian’ is famous for the innovative approaches taken by Charles Thomas and his many colleagues. From the 1940s to the 1960s they worked to improve understanding of Godrevy Warren’s individual sites and its whole complex historic landscape and environment. Their work was continued in more recent decades by Jacky and her own colleagues in the Cornwall Archaeological Unit.

Being in the towans (dunes) the soils are alkaline and there is good preservation of materials that would be lost in most other parts of Cornwall. Sites investigated include Bronze Age, Post-Roman and medieval settlements, including the medieval house of Crane Godrevy, set within a Romano-British round.

Jacky has led many walks here and writes: ‘We tend to stop at various places to take in the view and discuss the landscape, management, history and archaeology. Members will see the ruins of Crane Godrevy, and the Bronze Age and post-Roman sites. I bring and share photos and maps from the archaeological archive.’
