Weekend Workshop: Polyphonies of Story
Sat 28 Oct 2023 10:00 - Sun 29 Oct 2023 17:00
Dock11, 10435
Description
ABOUT THE WORKSHOP
This workshop is an exploration of stories as containers, as multiplicitous assemblages of beings and voices. Many of these voices have been muted as we have followed the simple, single, straight-lined Hero story. In this workshop we will work with fairy tale and myth to see how we can leave this mono-voice and get tangled in the burbling, murmuring, sirening realities of all the others in such a story. How we can allow these voices to unmute and speak through us. How we can find a way to tell a different kind of polyphonic story. We will explore the craft and research of storytelling: how to deepen our connection with our own breath, voice and imagination; how to explore both verbal and non-verbal ways of telling; and how to approach story in more embodied ways, with a more embodied voice.
Instruction will be given in English but participants are deeply encouraged to work in their mother tongue/ any other tongue/s that they would like to work in.

ABOUT THE FACILITATORS
Cat Gerrard (she/her; GB/DE) is a storyteller, dramaturg, puppeteer and facilitator from the UK, based in Berlin. She trained in acting at Drama Studio London and later in collaborative performance-making at LISPA (now Arthaus Berlin). Cat’s work is multi-disciplinary and always created in an intuitive, collaborative, devised process. At the heart of Cat’s work is story – from the personal to the mythic, the individual to the collective. She circles around how we embody story, how we can develop a metaphorical kind of thinking, experiencing and transmission of artistic work. Between 2010-2015, Cat founded and ran TailSpin as Artistic Director, curating monthly storytelling nights in London and the annual Story Bazaar festival, both of which aimed to offer space for tellers to explore, experiment with their craft and push the boundaries of what we think storytelling is, in front of a warm, encouraging and inviting audience. As a dramaturg – primarily in theatre and dance - and facilitator, Cat’s work seeks to integrate the various elements of a process: to include the dynamics and interplay between the personal, interpersonal and transpersonal elements that are in each creative process. She was a mentor/dramaturgical consultant for 101concrete’s show Assemblage, at fabrik Potsdam in the summer of 2022 and is the dramaturg for Adi Weinberg’s If the bull won’t come, which premiered, also at the fabrik, in November 2022. Cat mentors, curates and teaches various workshops (both online and off) and is a regular teacher at Arthaus Berlin and Cours Florent, Berlin. www.catgerrard.com
