Description:
Join master artist, Matthew Conner, and the Catholic Art Institute for this unique three day workshop in the ancient painting techniques of egg tempera. This workshop will focus on the the egg tempera painting techniques used by Blessed Fra Angelico and early Christian artists. Students will learn from in-class demonstrations that will begin with the initial drawing, work through egg tempera paint mixing and glazing. Students will copy from a choice of two different Fra Angelico paintings. A discussion of materials and best practices will be covered.
The course is open to artists of all experience levels, from amateur to professional. Students should have some drawing and painting experience. This course is open to adults and students aged 15 and older.
Materials: Students enrolling in the workshop will need to purchase the workshop kit of materials through Natural Pigments: https://www.naturalpigments.com/pigments/sets/koo-schadler-egg-tempera-kit-without-glass-palette.html or bring comparable materials.
Needed
1 - Natural Pigment’s CAI Egg Tempera Kit
1 - Small, clear container with screw top, ca ½ - 1 c – for emulsion
1 - Paper towels – for cleanup
1 - Extra mixing surface, a plate, plastic or ceramic, a piece of glass, etc
x - Sketch or copier paper, ca 12 x 9”
x - Drawing pencils and eraser, standard weight(s)
2 or 3 - Tracing paper, ca 12 x 9”
2 or 3 - Transfer paper or graphite/charcoal powder, 6B+ graphite pencil, loose dark pigment
1 - Water container, ideally with lid – Tupperware, purpose-built water bucket, bottom half of a
milk jug, etc
1 - Materials for notes as desired
Optional
x - Watercolor paper, hot-press and stretched is best but even cold-press or unstretched – for
experimenting
3 - 4 T - Clear alcohol, white wine, vodka, etc – optional for the emulsion
1 - Ziploc bag, 5 x 8” or larger
1 - Table easel – if you already have one
1 - Mahl stick – if desired, for use with the table easel
1 - Watercolor well palette – for additional wells and mixing area, if you already have one
1 - Silverpoint
1- Marker, colored tape, etc – id’ing things as needed
1 - Scotch-brite pad, small – useful for cleaning dried palette
1 - Knife, x-acto, box-cutter, etc – for piercing yolk
x - Barrier cream, latex/nitrile gloves, particle respirator/mask –While the pigments which we will
be using are in the least toxic stratum, i.e. no arsenic, heavy metals, etc, even excessive house
dust can have a ill effect. Tidy studio practice is recommended and artists are welcome to use
protective measures as they judge appropriate.
If you have extra, e.g. watercolor brushes, pigments, paper, etc, feel free to bring them along.
