Mix/Unmix Art & Science Exhibition: Lunchtime Talk
With Cat Scott MRSS (Fluid Sculptor, Bradford) & Mallika Rana (Scientist, University of Leeds)
Join Cat Scott MRSS and Mallika Rana for a lunchtime talk and Q&A, as they share their combined research in Mixing/Unmixing in Sensory, Regenerative Fluid Sculpture from over the past eight months. Their collaboration began on the Leeds Creative Labs: Climate Futures programme with The Cultural Institute and Priestley Centre for Climate Futures, at the University of Leeds in 2025.
Experience the process behind this colourful, sensory sculptural prototype, at the confluence of art & climate futures, based on cross-sector research in:
- Fluids in motion
- Circularity & Design for Disassembly
- Regenerative fluid systems & sculpture-making
Join Cat and Mallika for an inspiring lunchtime talk, with the chance to see the exhibition and ask any burning questions you may have about this cross-sector-partner art and climate collaboration.

Mixing/Unmixing in Sensory, Regenerative Fluid Sculpture, 2025-26
Regenerative Fluid Sculpture Series (Work-in-Progress)
Cat Scott MRSS in collaboration with Colour and Process Chemist Mallika Rana (University of Leeds)
Acrylic, bespoke pump system, commercial fluorescent dyes, oil, glycerin, air bubbles, fan, magnet, tubing, bespoke components
Building on their original collaboration formed through Leeds Creative Labs: Climate Futures with the Cultural Institute, University of Leeds (2025) - a special edition of the long-running Leeds Creative Labs programme delivered in partnership with the Priestley Centre for Climate Futures, artist Cat Scott MRSS and academic Mallika Rana continue their interdisciplinary exploration of fluid motion, sensory design and regenerative systems, supported with Follow On Funding from The Cultural Institute, University of Leeds (2025-26).
Their current project will research and develop a series of sensory, regenerative fluid sculptures using transparent vessels, handmade pumps, illuminated dyes, magnetic stirrers and physical computing. These kinetic prototypes will act as dynamic metaphors for environmental transformation, impermanence and renewal, bringing the science of materials and the poetics of climate systems into motion.
The project embodies principles of ‘design for disassembly’, ensuring each prototype can be easily dismantled, reused or recycled, mirroring the regenerative systems it seeks to represent.
Supported with curatorial mentoring from Michael Richmond (Curator, Yorkshire Contemporary); engagement mentoring from Lydia Murray (Producer, IOU Creation Centre); a collaboration with Creative Technologist Matt Collins developed a bespoke fluid system for the sculptures that mixed/unmixed miscible/immiscible fluids; a public exhibition on the top floor at Stage@Leeds and a talk/Q&A showcasing the prototype/s at the University of Leeds; alongside a sensory creative activities with Autistic women artists at Pyramid of Arts, Leeds.
These engagements will inform future iterations and potential large-scale commissions.
