Ilen River Stories for Heritage Week

Going up-river and back in time: Illustrating the historical relationship between the people of Skibbereen and the Ilen River

Do you have a story to tell about your connection to the Ilen River? From trade and transport to recreational fishing and swimming, the Ilen has shaped Skibbereen's history. Join us from 10am - 12pm at Skibbereen Library on Thursday, 20th of August for an imagined journey up-river. On a physical map of the Ilen River, we will illustrate key moments from the Ilen's history alongside memories of local residents that showcase eco-cultural heritage and connection. This event is part of Heritage Week 2026.

This event promises to be fun, engaging and participant-led. We can't wait to see you there!
