How did the atmospheric pollution of steam-powered modernity shape visual perception and artworks in the early decades of the Industrial Revolution? How can we read artworks for both narrative and formal responses to climatic pollution? To what extent were the aesthetics of steam and pollution synonymous with the emergence of modern visual culture in nineteenth-century Britain? This afternoon-long event co-sponsored by the CEE and the School of Art History brings together scholars from Britain and France to present their research and host a discussion.
