"Word, the paltriest and mightiest” (Jung, 2009) can forge profound connection or enact epistemic violence. The silencing of words has shaped both our personal and collective experience of the on-going Palestinian Nakba (catastrophe). Shrouded in duplicity, words have shattered Palestinian life on the hard rock of indifference. When they are foreclosed or splintered, words fail to express the overwhelming distress.
Silencing words silences memory. Memory is not merely a storage system of past events; it is an active process of bringing the hidden into light, a process of unveiling reality itself, truth is disclosure. In the story I am telling, the amputation of memory is met with another type of memory, one that defies amnesia. Memory, like imagination, can open a cosmic sea which saves the spirit from collapsing into nothingness.
In this talk, we will think about how Palestinian history, culture and identity are being silenced and erased. In this talk, we will think about how Palestinian history, culture and identity are being silenced and erased, and how they can be retrieved.
