Once a year we try to offer a very special dinner as part of Dunbar Charity Wine Events and for 2026 we're delighted to announce a very special four course meal with four separate vintages of the famous Chȃteau Calon-Ségur in Bordeaux.

Calon-Ségur is one of the most famous of the Grand Cru Classés chȃteaux of Bordeaux, producing outstanding red wines with a depth and complexity that allows them to age for decades. It is situated in the St Estèphe appellation at the north of the Haut-Médoc and it was classified as a 'third growth' (3ème Grand Cru Classé) in 1855 but is often rated higher. For many years it was owned by the Marquis de Ségur who also owned first growth Chȃteaux Latour and Lafite, but he always said his "heart was at Calon" and this is marked with a heart shape on the labels which has remained unchanged for generations!
To open any bottle of Chȃteau Calon-Ségur would be a very special treat, but for this dinner Gareth is delighted to share bottles from four different vintages going back 56 years to the famous 1970 vintage! This is going considerably further back than any of the vertical tastings he has previously arranged. In all, participants will taste Chȃteau Calon-Ségur 1970, 1989, 1999 and 2008 - all amazing years including three vintages from the last century, and even the youngest vintage will be 18 years old! In fact when people ask Gareth 'What is your all-time favourite wine?' has has answered 'Calon-Ségur 1970' (which he has had the privilege of tasting on a few rare occasions previously).
As well as the four vintages of Calon-Ségur we will also have a Champagne Bollinger aperitif, an outstanding white Bordeaux from a famous estate with the first course, and two spectacular vintage Sauternes with the dessert from a superb Grand Cru Classé property Chȃteau Myrat in the Sauternes area (just south of Bordeaux). Sauternes is known for some of the world's most exquisite dessert wines. We'll taste Chȃteau Myrat 2001 and 1996 (25 and 30 years old respectively!)
Please see the menu above - the food will be prepared by Gareth and his wife - but although the food will be simpler than the wines we hope it will still be a very special evening: as shown there is a choice of meat or vegetarian main course (if you or your guests have any other dietary issues please advise when booking and we will see what's possible).
There is no fixed charge for this event, but the event is arranged in support of the Scottish Refugee Council and because of the very special wines being presented as well as the food we suggest a donation of around £99/person if that is possible (but you are free to give more or less according to your circumstances). We are suggesting this donation to keep the event affordable for a wide range of wine lovers (but it's worth noting that a dinner with these wines organised by a hotel or restaurant would probably cost at least £250/person!) As usual, Gareth is donating all the wines so we can raise as much as possible for the charity: the only costs to be deducted will be for the food and any admin/printing costs. If space is available, you can book up to 4 places if you wish to bring friends (but don't delay as there are only 8 places overall plus Gareth and Sharon Morgan as hosts).
You can also choose to add one donation for all the places your are booking (no need to make a separate payment for each) - and you can even Gift Aid your donation if you are a taxpayer. If you are booking multiple events, you can now check out several bookings together, but please add a donation for each event.
