Mr Worthing (Mr John Worthing that is) is a very charming man. He is engaged to a very charming girl called Gwendolyn. The thing is, she thinks he's called Ernest. In fact, everyone he knows in London thinks he's called Ernest. His family who reside in the country with him, however, know he is actually called John. Mr Worthing has invented a rapscallion of a younger brother called “Ernest” who gets into no end of scrapes. Mr Worthing is, therefore, often called up to London in order to extricate his brother from these various scrapes. When in London he assumes the name of “ Ernest”, and until now, no one has been any the wiser. When his dear friend Algernon learns his secret, along with the existence of his young and pretty ward called Cecily, off he goes to the country, with a handful of "Ernest Worthing" visitor cards in his pocket.
